9/22/2012 - Brooks 3 at Roxbury Latin 2
Game Notes:
Brooks got its ISL season off to a dream start with two goals in the first four minutes. Makin played Milbury in from the corner and he served across and Alex Wagner got on the end of it. Two minutes later Greg Conrad drew a ball back across the box that winger Seve Elkin met at pace and he finished cleanly from fifteen yards out. Brooks continued to carry the play for a while longer with very strong combination play in the middle of the pitch. Gradually Latin found its legs and began to push into the Brooks end. Against the run of play Andrew Bruno made a surprising run across goal and was bumped off the ball, resulting in a penalty that Milbury finished. The 3-0 halftime score wasn't the least bit indicative of the gains Latin had made in the final minutes as Barry and Wheeler were proving very difficult for the Brooks defenders to handle. Latin stormed out of the half and were rewarded when Barry finished a rebound from a Wheeler strike. Five minutes later the Brooks defense, under immense pressure, returned the favor by bumping a Latin player off the ball in the box. Wheeler finished the penalty well and sent RL into a long and determined bid for the equalizer. Brooks hung on with desperation defending and were lucky to retain the slim margin. Gradually in the final ten minutes they regained a bit of their footing and the match settled into some nice back and forth play. Though it wasn't the most elegant soccer, both teams competed hard and fairly. Brooks were fortunate to escape with three points and both teams should look forward to strong Gummere Cup runs.
