10/27/12 - Brooks 2 - Governor's 0 - Official Game Review

10/27/2012 - Brooks 2 at Governor's 0

Game Notes:

A very hardworking Gov's side gave Brooks fits this afternoon in front of a large crowd in Byfield. Timothy Quimby stopped a number of Brooks chances in the Gov's goal and their energetic strikers continually pressured for the ball. Zach Vieira got Brooks on the board in the fifteenth minute when he finished his own rebound from the post. Jory Makin snuck a corner through the defense and inside the far post in the thirty third minute. In the second half the play was back and forth and both teams deserved better than the goalless half.

10/24/12 - Brooks 1 - Lawrence Academy 0 - Dads Game Review

Everyone knew this would be a tough game today.  This isn't the Lawrence of two years ago.  The team has improved greatly since then and they play on a smaller field which seems to be challenging for Brooks.  Today would play out somewhat as expected.  Lawrence carried play for a good portion of the first half.  Mattie was immense in the goal.  The little man really came up big on a couple of very challenging shots.  Brooks had their moments but it was not the controlling, efficient Brooks team we had seen the last two games.  They were playing better than the Rivers game, but it just was not clicking.  Passes to the top third of the field, from the mids up to the strikers, were continually long.  Going harmlessly into the keeper's hands.

On the sidelines the parents tried to encourage the boys as much as we could.  We questioned some of the referees calls pretty loudly resulting in a conversation with the linesman at halftime.  He was good about it and we had a laugh with him.  But on the field before the half Lawrence pressured Brooks pretty heavily.  They controlled the ball more and applied more pressure.  At the half it was 0-0.

Coming out for the second half we saw some long over the top balls from Brooks.  Strikers were making runs but the balls would just be to long and either go to the keeper or end up rolling out of bounds.  Frustration was beginning to set in with Zach, Bruno and Alex.  All the while Amadu and Aziz, the Lawrence duo, were passing the ball all over the place.  Luckily the Brooks defense remained solid.  Lawrence was getting numerous corners and free kicks.  Off one set play they had a clean shot off the cross bar above Mattie's hands. On another, they hit the post only to see the ball roll across the net and out of play on the other side.  Unlucky for sure.

About 20 minutes into the half, Brono made a great individual effort winning the ball near center.  He drove to the right taking 2 defenders with him.  Down inside the 18 he cut to the near post, spotted Zach a few yards behind him but more towards the net.  Andrew laid a nice pass back to Zach who looked, shifted left, another step left and the put the ball cleanly inside the right post.  Great effort all around.  Bruno made the play and Zach made the finish.  The balance of the game was one that kept everyone on the edge.  Lawrence pressed harder.  Brooks defending well.  Brooks having opportunities of their own, but not the same quality of opportunity Lawrence was getting.  15 minutes remain.  Everyone watching the clock, encouraging it to move along faster. 10 minutes to go.  Brooks has a few more chances, but play still in Lawrence's favor.  5 to go, Brooks knows they need to just possess the ball and eat time.  They keep kicking it out.  They hold it.  They send it to the corner and hold off defenders.

1 minute to go, Zach making a run from his side of the center line but on the right sideline.  He's running with 2 defenders chasing him.  I'm encouraging him to turn on the burners and beat the guys to the corner.  He abruptly pulls up everyone runs by him, he plays the ball back to his right back who eats more time and then sends the ball to the corner.  The play was much more impressive to watch than my description.  Parents were talking about it after the game.  The burst of speed to pull away; the sudden stop to avoid the pursuit and the heads up play back to kill more time.  Smart for sure.

The whistle finally blew and Brooks had escaped with a 1-0 win.  Lawrence was dejected.  They had played better than Brooks today and felt they deserved the win.  In a way they did, but I'm much happier with the way it ended.  Breathing room between Brooks and Lawrence.  Will Rivers lose?   NO!!  Will Belmont and Roxbury Latin lose??  THEY BOTH DID!!  Definitely some room now between second and the rest of the league.  Unfortunately there is still one team, Rivers, at the head of the pack.  Saturday the race continues!!  Rivers has St. Marks (currently tied for 4th and playing very well) and then Lawrence next Wednesday.  Brooks has Governors and BB&N coming up.  This will be a telling 2 games.  Brooks has the easier schedule on paper, but who knows what will happen on the field!  Stay tuned!

10/24/2012 - Brooks 1 - Lawrence 0 - Official Game Review

10/24/2012 - Brooks 1 at Lawrence 0

Game Notes:

This was an unusually exciting Wednesday contest in Groton with Brooks fortunate to capture three points from the previously undefeated and very talented Lawrence side. The Lawrence attack was stellar throughout and only the spectacular goalkeeping of Matt Myers, the crossbar and a post kept the sheet clean. It was the tireless Andrew Bruno who turned the match on its ear when he stripped the ball loose, charged deep into the Lawrence box and slotted a ball back to a waiting Zach Vieira. Vieira took two calm touches and finished deftly to the near post. Lawrence pressed for the equalizer for the final twenty five minutes but a stalwart Brooks backline stood tall. This was great display of ISL soccer.

10/20/12 - Brooks 3 - Belmont Hill 0 - Dads Game Review

The score today is deceiving.  You see Brooks 3- Belmont Hill 0 and you think Brooks dominated.  They did, but they didn't.  Ball possession favored Brooks probably by a 65 min to 25 min margin.  Brooks owned the ball.  However, Belmont Hill was never out of this game.  They looked strong throughout for sure.  Brooks had many early chances, but the Belmont Hill keeper was solid when needed.  Brooks also continued their trend of missing wide, high, and every possible way they could.

Zach was a marked man today.  He had a follower or two no matter where he went on the field.  It obviously frustrated him.  But, it's something he should expect every game until the end of the season and learn to deal with.  I did see him adapt over the course of the game.  The beginning of the first half was tough as he was using his arms to get position or hold the marker off and was getting called by the referee.  He'd make his runs and his tail was always there.  He'd gather the ball, attempt to make a move get by the first defender only to meet 2 and sometimes 3 more.  Initially he would try to bull his way through, but that never works.  He realized it pretty quickly and began to lay off beautiful passes to teammates.  He also began to lay back drawing the defenders to him and letting Greg, or Bruno or Pat spring to the front.  For a bit I wondered why he was not pressing up and then I realized what he was doing.  It was working really well!!

Sometime in the middle of the half he made a play over to Pat and found himself in the air along with his marker.  The Belmont Hill player hit the ground first and then Zach came down. The BH player stayed down. Zach immediately rolled over to see if he could help the player.  The BH player went to the sideline.  We all assumed Zach must have stepped on his hand inadvertently.  A few minutes later he was back with his hand and thumb taped up.  And the battle continued.  Zach made a cut with the ball near mid field, the BH defender on his back.  All of a sudden the BH player goes down and is rolling on the ground screaming in pain.  I thought I saw his leg slip out on the grass and assumed it was a groin or abdominal injury.  The cart had to come out this time.  It didn't look good at all.

Play resumed and Greg blasted a shot to the top corner a few minutes before the half.  What a SHOT!!!  After scoring, Greg charged to the sideline.  Everyone assumed he was looking for mom or dad.  But he found George from last years team and jumped into his arms!!  George wasn't ready for that full speed jump and almost landed on his back.  The whole team joined and celebrated about 10 yards off the sideline.  The referee had to call them all back to the field.

The half ended.  Greg had scored an earlier goal that was called back for being offside.  Of course no one was comfortable with a 1-0 lead.  About 10 minutes in, our fears come true.  BH ties the game.  Wait!  The linesman has his flag up!!  Offside!!  Still 1-0.  Ten minutes later, Pat and Bruno go in on a 2 v 1 break.  Somehow Pat ends up to the right of the net, far to deep.  A couple of cuts and the ball finds the net.  Breathing room!!  Play continues with Zach still being marked.  Still playing back, drawing the defenders up and allowing runs by his teammates.

With just under 2 minutes to go, Zach pulls down a high arching ball near the mid line.  Touches it to his left and beats the last defender to the ball.  Zach and the keeper 1 v 1.  The crowd is up screaming as he places the ball calmly to the keepers right and into the net.  3-0 Brooks!!  We can all breath a little easier now.  The ball comes back to center and the final whistle comes shortly after.

Belmont Hill played very well as they always do.  This was their first loss of the year and put a bit of distance between Brooks and BH.  Now to watch the scoreboard and hope for losses by Rivers and Lawrence.  Another big one coming up Wednesday.  Lawrence Academy on their home field.
